I was in a Roca News mini-doc!
A week before the spring semester began at UNLV, I arrived to Sheri’s Ranch on “doctor day” for testing prior to my January tour. I had only been there an hour (which was spent mostly on the ranch treadmill getting my steps in) before receiving an email from Roca News asking if I was available for an interview; they found me from a Reddit AMA I did & were making a documentary about the town of Pahrump. Thirty minutes later, I found myself mic’d up & showing Max & Drew around these sacred grounds. Since it was doctor day, I didn’t have any of my fancy outfits, makeup, or knowledge that I’d be doing this ahead of time. Heck, I was even wearing a pimple patch - but I don’t think you can even tell. In some way this was all okay, even preferred. it was raw, & real. & me. I felt my task was to invite the world into our world for just a moment, & be as honest as I could. I am quite humbled by what has been an overwhelmingly positive response to the documentary; of course, it is a topic that can ignite strong opinions on either side & I was prepared for that. At my core I believe it is life-giving to feel free to be oneself, to be authentic, to be free of shame. Working at Sheri’s Ranch has helped me access that part of myself, & it is so awesome that I now get to share that with the world. Thank you Roca News for the beautiful edit & for spending time with me last month. Side note: I really believe in what they are doing as a news organization; you can find the Pahrump mini-doc on their YouTube channel along with many other interesting films.
